London February 2026 meeting, tournament reminder and shogi film

There will be a meeting of the London Shogi Club on 28.02.2026. We hold these meetings monthly where possible, normally on the last Saturday of the month. Always check to see if we are meeting, and which day we are meeting on.

We are currently playing in the basement room at Starbucks on Cowcross St, Farringdon. Do check downstairs, as you won't see anyone upstairs. There should be someone around from 11.00am until at least 2pm.

Everyone is very welcome, regardless of strength or experience.

The nearest tube station is Farringdon. Barbican station is also close. It's best to check which lines are running with Transport for London.

In addition, we would remind you that the British Shogi Championships will be held on the 14-15 February 2026. All are welcome and you can register for the tournament here.

We have also been asked to publicise The Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2026 which will be running from February through to the end of March, and will be screening The Final Piece, a mystery thriller featuring shogi. Could be interesting although I don't know that it will improve your game.

Steve Campbell is running a one-day shogi event in Birchington, Kent. It will be held on Saturday, June 6th, at the Seaview Hotel, less than ten minutes' walk from Birchington railway station. Some accommodation is available at the Seaview Hotel (CT7 9RA, landline 01843-841-660). If you want to enter the tournament or make enquiries, please send an email to Shogi London or post a message on the Shogi London facebook page and we will provide Steve's contact details.

Shogi tournament in Birchington on 06.06.2015

Steve Campbell is running an 'all-comers (veterans particularly welcome)' one-day shogi event in Birchington, Kent. It will be held on Saturday, June 6th, at the Seaview Hotel, which is less than ten minutes' walk from Birchington railway station. The Shogi London Supplement webpages have been slightly updated. Not much in the way of real news: but hopefully we'll have a nice report on the 2013 British Shogi Championships soon!

Shogi in Oxford / March 2011 shogi event

The Oxford University Japan Society (OUJS) is a student run society which brings together both university members and others with an interest in things Japanese. All are welcome.

On 5 February 2011 membership secretary Enki Cheung launched a Shogi Club with a beginners introduction session and a challenge match. The next shogi event will be on 5 March 2011. This is during the OUJS Matsuri from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th March. The schedule also includes sake and sushi tastings and viewing films by the celebrated Japanese film director and animator Miyazaki Hayao. Details can be found on the OUJS news blog here.

London shogi club member and current British Champion Steven Cain will be there on Saturday and will give a talk on shogi, help with the prizegiving, and offer comments and encouragement to all those learning this great Japanese game.

Shogi London Supplement

An extra website Shogi London Supplement has been set up to provide information on London, UK and other shogi which doesn't necessarily count as news.

At the moment, most of the material reflects similar articles on Shogi London, but the intention is that Shogi London Supplement will merge information from new articles and reflect the most up to date position.

Eventually it will contain material and links for beginners, rather than assuming readers already know all this. The first piece of new content is a more detailed report on the 2008 British Open Shogi Championships than provided in Shogi London.
