Shogi London Supplement has moved / new online resources

Shogi London Supplement has been moved by Google from the old 'googlepages' system to the new 'googlesites', and its web address has changed as a result. The old links will still work, and links on this site have now been updated.

A number of pages stopped working and some bits looked bad, so I've taken the opportunity to tidy things up. I've also added links to some more online shogi resources, including the long established Shogi-L mailing list, an excellent series of instructional videos on Youtube from Japanese amateur Hidetchi, and a new community 81 Square Universe.

Results of 3rd World Shogi Championship Tournament 2009

This tournament was held in New York on 14-15 November 2009, and I (Steven Cain) was lucky enough to be attending as the British representative, although I did not last long in a very strong field of amateur competitors from across the world.

I may write about my trip on Shogi London Supplement but for the moment I will note that the tournament was won very impressively by Paul Ogi, and that a short report has been posted on Shogi-L by Larry Kaufman here. Larry expects to provide more detail when this becomes available.

2009 British Shogi Championships - more details

The 2009 British Open Shogi Championships will be held on May 2nd/3rd (Saturday/Sunday) at Trinity College Cambridge

There will be 6 rounds (3 each day) at a time limit of 40 minutes plus 40 seconds for each move thereafter. Everybody plays in each round (unless there are an odd number of players) and there will be no handicaps. The games will start at 10:00 each day with an expected finish around 17:00. If the last round finishes early (as last year) there will be an optional blitz tournament after the main event.
The entry fee is £10 or 10 euros. All entry fees will be refunded as prizes. There will also be trophies for the British Open Shogi Champion, the British Shogi Champion (the highest placed player with a British passport) and the British Kyu-class Shogi Champion (the highest placed non-Dan-rated player with a British passport).
The British Shogi Champion will also win an expenses-paid (flight plus hotel room) trip to New York in November 2009 to represent Great Britain in an international shogi tournament.
The facilities at Trinity College (right in the centre of Cambridge) are excellent, but small, so there is a limit on the number of players (30). Please therefore enter as soon as possible to avoid disapointment.
You can enter by email to Shogi London or David Faldon or by writing to Flat 1, Stone House, North Foreland Road, Broadstairs, CT10 3NT. Please send no money as the entry fees will be collected at the tournament.

President, British Shogi Federation
