There is an opportunity to play Shogi (as well as many other games including Go, Othello, Chinese Chess, Entropy and Lines of Action) at the Mind Sports Olympiad, being held from 23-31 August at JW3 on London's Finchley Road. The Shogi event is on Sunday 23rd August starting at 7pm.
See the MSO website for details.
Information on the London Shogi Club, shogi events in or near London, and occasional other stuff. Shogi is Japanese chess, and the key way it differs from regular chess is that when you take your opponent pieces, you keep them, and can 'drop' them back on the board later. It's pretty popular in Japan so you often see it in anime and Japanese art, but it's not very well known in the UK.
