London July 2025 meeting will be on 05.07.2025

There will be a meeting of the London Shogi Club on Saturday 05.07.2025. We hold these meetings monthly where possible. Normally on the last Saturday of the month, but our July meeting is early as we didn't have a club meeting in June. 

The shogi club is at Starbucks on Cowcross St, Farringdon. Do check downstairs, as you won't see anyone upstairs. There should be someone around from 11.00am until at least 2pm. 

Everyone is very welcome, regardless of strength or experience.

The London shogi club is free and we don't pay for the venue but we do welcome any donations that attendees might like to make.This money will be used to support tournaments which are run at paid for venues.  

There will also be shogi demonstrations at the London Strategy Games Festival at the London Mindsports Centre on 29.06.2025 along with demonstrations of many other games, and e.g. discussion of game design. This is a paid for event - £25 until 15 June and £30 thereafter. 

Shogi at the Strategy Games Festival on 29 June 2025

There will be no meeting of the London Shogi Club in June 2025, but club members will be demonstrating shogi at the Strategy Games Festival on 29 June 2025. We do plan to have a club meeting in early July.

The Strategy Games Festival is being held at the London Mindsports Centre, and celebrates classic table-top strategy games and explores how to design new games. For £30 (£25 if you register by 15 June) you get shogi, demonstrations of many other games, and discussions of game design generally. Details can be found on the Strategy Games Festival website.

London May 2025 meeting will be on 31.05.2025

Teaching professionals at London event on 3-4.05,2025

This is to remind people about the 2 day tournament and teaching event on 3-4 May 2025. 

We are delighted to have two excellent teaching professionals attending: Yasushi Ishikawa and Sanada Tetsuaki, Both trained in the Shorekai school for apprentice shogi professionals.

Mr Ishikawa is a 4 dan teaching professional (and reached 3 dan in the Shorekai training school f). He produces English language teaching videos which can be accessed on Vimeo here.

Mr Sanada reached 2 dan in the Shorekai and is also a teaching professional. He lives in the UK and you can read an interview with him at the Ludwigshafen tournament here.

Both players were extremely strong by Japanese standards as a prerequisite to joining the Shorekai, but the important point for the coming weekend is that they are also excellent teachers and really friendly. 

Saturday will mainly focus on competitive games. The Sunday will be more focused on instruction through lectures, discussion and play, but will also include a short blitz tournament.

London April 2025 meeting / reminder of May event

2 day tournament and teaching event on 3-4 May 2025

The London Shogi club is delighted to announce a 2 day tournament and teaching event on 3-4 May 2025, open to players of all abilities and all nationalities. 

Organised by club regulars Steven Cain and Kevin Butchart, this will feature both competitive games and instruction from registered teaching professionals Yasushi Ishikawa and Sanada Tetsuaki, both of whom trained in the Shorekai school for apprentice shogi professionals

Interesting tournament in Frankfurt in early March 2025

The Inter City Shogi Cup is being held in Frankfurt am Main on the first weekend in March.

There will be a blitz tournament on the Friday (28 February) followed by a 9 round tournament on Saturday and Sunday (1-2 March). The format will comprise 'class championships' for specified grading ranges, followed by play-offs between the class champions which may be played at handicap.

There are some lovely prizes including fans autographed by Tatsuya Sugai 8 Dan
