Tournament (and no club meeting) in October 2024

This is to remind people that there will be no London Shogi club in October, but there will be a 2 day tournament. 

The British Open Shogi Championships tournament is on the weekend of 26-27 October 2024. The tournament is open to players of all abilities and of all nationalities.

It will be held at the London Mindsports Centre. The nearest tube station is Ravenscourt Park. The two Hammersmith stations are a bit further away.  It takes 30-50 minutes to get to the venue from the main London railway stations, and 40 minutes from Heathrow airport.

Reminder - 2024 British Shogi Championships on 26-27 October 2024

London September 2024 meeting will be on 28.09.2024

There will be a meeting of the London Shogi Club on Saturday 28.09.2024. We hold these meetings monthly where possible, normally on the last Saturday or Sunday of the month. Always check to see if we are meeting, and which day we are meeting on.

We are currently playing in the basement room at Starbucks on Cowcross St, Farringdon. Do check downstairs, as you won't see anyone upstairs. There should be someone around from 11.00am until at least 2pm.

Everyone is very welcome, regardless of strength or experience.

The nearest tube station is Farringdon. Barbican station is also close. It's best to check which lines are running with Transport for London.

British Shogi Championships on 26-27 October 2024

The London Shogi club is delighted to announce a 2 day British Open Shogi Championships tournament on the weekend of 26-27 October 2024. The tournament is open to players of all abilities and of all nationalities.

Organised by club regulars Steven Cain and Kevin Butchart this will be held at the London Mindsports Centre. The nearest tube station is Ravenscourt Park. Reminder: shogi at the MSO on 18.08.2024

There will be no London shogi club in August, but the London MSO have included shogi in their schedule for this year,  on the evening of Sun 18 August.

    Online prize tournament for players going to the 2024 European Shogi Championship


    The 10th Shogi Wars Kishin Tournament, is being played online, and will be focused on Europe this year, with initial prizes in the form of travel subsidies to the ESC/WOSC in Barcelona and further prizes in a competition during that event.

    The tournament will be played on the Shogi Wars App and is open to all residents of European countries.

    The qualification tournament will take place on July 21st, 12:00 - 14:00 UTC.

    The final tournament will take place on August 2nd in Barcelona during the ESC/WOSC.

    Shogi at London Mindsports Olympiad on 18.08.2024

    The London MSO have included shogi in their schedule for this year, it's on the evening of Sun 18 August.

    Sunday 16 June 2024

    The Heart of Wales Open 2024 will be on 29-30 June 2024

    The Heart of Wales Open 2024 will be held in Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys on the last weekend in June. The area is peaceful and beautiful, and can be reached by road or stopping at Llanwrtyd on the rural Heart of Wales rail line.

    Tournament games will be played at the Nant y Walch Barn. Details are here

    The tournament will be run by experienced tournament organisers from Shogi Hamburg with the approval of the British Shogi Federation.

    The main event will be 7 rounds, 40 min + 30 sec byoyomi.

    Final call for participants in UK qualification tournament for International Shogi Forum

    The British Shogi Federation has been asked to provide a UK representative for the International Shogi Forum to be held in Tokyo, Japan, in November 2024. 

    The representative will be provided with travelling expenses, and food and accommodation for the duration of the event. 

    If you are a UK passport holder and would like to compete in the qualification event on 18 May 2024 let us know by registering on the tournament page by close on Saturday 4 May 2024.

    The London shogi club is free and we don't pay for the venue but we do welcome any donations that attendees might like to make.This money will be used to support tournaments which are run at paid for venues.

    UK qualification tournament for International Shogi Forum will be on 18 May 2024

    The British Shogi Federation has been asked to provide a UK representative for the International Shogi Forum to be held in Tokyo, Japan, in November 2024. 

    The representative will be provided with travelling expenses, and food and accommodation for the duration of the event. 

    We are holding a qualification tournament on 18 May 2024. The entry fee will be £15 and the venue will be the London Mindsports Centre at 21 Dalling Road, London W6 0JD. More information and how to get there can be found on their website

    If you are a UK passport holder and would like to compete let us know by registering on the tournament page

    We asked for expressions of interest in February, and based on these the tournament may be quite a small event. The exact format depends on the number of entries and it would be good to know of any further entries in good time.

    We're also thinking about running a London Shogi meeting on the 24th but it isn't clear if people can attend that too. If we get enough interest it will be confirmed here.

    UK qualification tournament for International Shogi Forum 2024 - who is interested?


    The British Shogi Federation has been asked to provide a representative for the International Shogi Forum to be held in Tokyo, Japan, in November 2024. 
    The UK representative will be provided with travelling expenses, and food and accommodation for the duration of the event. 

    Only UK passport holders are eligible to be selected. Steven Cain (the author of this blog) will not be eligible having played in both the 2014 and 2017 events, so we will be sending someone else to Japan.  

    If you are a UK passport holder and would like to compete in a qualification tournament let us know by emailWe are looking at holding the tournament in May or possibly June. 
    The exact format of the tournament depends on the number of entries and it would be good to know this as soon as possible.
